September Is Blowing In

September has rolled in with a bang with Tropical Storm Gordon. So far I am counting my blessings. The only casualty is one of my angel wing begonias.

I had planned to get up this morning and bring my plants in that were on my two back porches, but we had some gusty wind pop up last night and one went down off the side of the porch. Today has mostly been very overcast and a windy but nothing major. So grateful.

The others safely tucked inside.

I love September, but as I turn the page on the calendar I am always mindful that hurricane season kicks it up a notch with September. It is kind of always in the back of my mind.

Hubby and I celebrated our 34th anniversary eating out on Saturday evening at Acre in Auburn. It all began for us in Auburn. We were friends the entire time I was there as a student. We lived in the same apartment complex. Right upstairs from me. It was not until I graduated that we started dating. He had two more quarters to attend, and I took a teaching job in nearby Columbus, Georgia. Our kids never really get how fast we moved from the first kiss. We try to remind them we had known each other and really were good friends with great respect for each other. I think we both feel God just put us together.

Anyway that first kiss was on September 10, 1983 at the Southern Miss game. I came back to attend and we took a walk that night after the game. His version is I attacked him. Not so...but, either way I didn't mind the kiss which is really odd that I didn't. WE weren't on a date and I was a good girl extremely conservative. He sent flowers the next week and again unusually for me I didn't get turned off. He put a diamond on my finger on November 5th, 1983, and we were married September 1st, 1984.

We came back on Sunday for our son's best friend's wedding. He actually feels like a second son because he actually lived with us for some time. His family life wasn't the best and he stayed with us a good bit of the time. We are so proud of him. He has done well for himself.

I have had Hubby around for two full days. He didn't have to work today because of the "maybe" storm. AS I said, I will gladly take what we got.

We rode out to the beach tonight to see how things were going.

Saw a reporter, thankfully just a local reporter doing her thing with the waves in the background.

I finished my Spell of the Moon by Blackbird Designs. I liked it but the colors were so much darker than the sample. I used all of the called for colors and linen. You can see the picture is so much lighter than the actual finish. I don't dislike, but I think I need to make it a habit to research an actual blog or IG photo for future projects.

32 Count Tin Roof Linen by Weeks Dye Works
I did 2 over 2 rather than 1 over 2 because the linen was so loosely woven I thought it needed two strands.

I fully finished my Autumn pillow for the church pew and began to pull out fall decor. I am not even going to say I know it is too early too pull it out. It will take me two weeks to get it all done with my schedule this month. More about that in another post.

I have cloth picked out for my bat stitch.

I also read a really good book. I checked it out from the library when I dropped in the other day. I had all of about 5 minutes so I just dropped by the first bookcase to browse the newest releases. I picked it solely on the cover. I got lucky.
It has two things I love in a book...a mystery present day story and a journal like story going back in time.
The plot centers around a young woman studying to be a wine master. She travels from her home in California to a vineyard in France where her mother grew up. She discovers a secret cellar and a tale of whether her ancestors were collaborators or part of the Resistance in World War II.
Like I said...good plot.

My foyer is decorated for fall. I am saying it --I am ready for it. I may be sorry next week, but oh well. Foyer is all that is done, so I will go slowly with the rest.

That is it for today. I will be busy this week, but we will see how often I can post.
Sandy

  1. I enjoyed your love story! And yes, you had known each other as friends for a long time, so the romance part could move quickly.

I agree with you that the sample of Tin Roof is much lighter than your finished piece, but you did a great job and it looks so good.

The Autumn pillow is beautiful. You did an excellent job with the plaid cording. The colors match up perfectly.

The Batty about Halloween is good too but my sister has had real live bats in their nearly 200 year old house so we don’t even joke about those creatures in our family!!

Sorry about the broken pot from Stormy Gordon. Our kids (in your general area) are hunkered down this evening with a Hallmark movie, doing fine thus far. I really like the picture of the waves and sea oats in the storm. Be safe!

    1. Thanks Barbara. Glad to be waking up to just pine straw to clean up. No bats then in your house. I usually choose nothing scary for Halloween. I don't like scary stuff:) Just jack o lanterns with smiles and friendly ghosts like Casper.
I am going to slowly bring out fall over the next few days. I alternate years doing that. Sometimes I truly wait until the end of September and then others I do it early. I usually regret early because I get tired of it. I hope by next year to have some more September things like crows and school houses cross stitched to tide me over until at least mid September.

  2. Glad you are safe Sandy and that you only lost a plant. This is a scary time of the year with hurricanes.

You were married on my birthday. I have so many friends who either were married on that day or it's their birthday. It's a popular day to celebrate.

Love all of your projects. The Blackbird stitch is so pretty. The Autumn pillow is gorgeous. And Batty is so cute. Such great projects...perfectly done.

Love seeing the coast. We are leaving on Saturday for a week in St. Augustine and I can't wait. RJ

    1. I think many choose it when it actually falls on Labor Day which was our case. We didn't get to take a honeymoon as I had just moved to FWB and taken a brand new job. We waited until the following summer when school was out. I hope you have a wonderful time in St. Augustine. I love that area. Enjoy your birthday all September...mine is the 14th.

    2. The year I was born it fell on Labor Day too which I thought was quite appropriate for my Mom's part. We didn't go on our honeymoon for a few years because of the Air Force but enjoyed it a lot two years later. Happy Birthday early as I will still be in St. Augustine on the 14th. Have a great day. Will you be at a game that day? RJ

    3. We are letting the kids all go to the LSU game that weekend. It will probably be Lindsay's last weekend to travel with the baby due soon. We will be there this weekend and the 22nd for sure. You know we probably enjoyed those later honeymoons more. The kids these days would not understand that either, but it was logical thing to do at the time.

  3. I'm so glad you made it through the storm ok! Now hopefully there won't be too much rain.

Your stitching and your entry way are so pretty. I have been looking at stitching kits online. Where do you get yours? I think they add so much character to a home.

    1. I order everything from a place called 123Stitch. I don't have anything locally anymore. 123 Stitch is quick and they aren't kits, but they tell you everything you need such as colors of floss and linens. They have it all on the website. IT is very easy to use and navigate their site. For inspiration go down to my stitching friends blog list and look on Stitching Dreams and Stitching Friends. They both do lots of smalls and you will find so much to look at that is way better than mine. Priscilla does a ton of finishing other than pillows. I am just not nearly as creative as her nor do I have the space to put those items she does.
Anyway, thanks for thinking of me. I have nothing but pine straw to pick up today and just a few branches so I am so grateful.

  4. Sweet courting story and so different from the romance stories of today! Happy Anniversary!!

I am ready to start decorating for Fall Too, it's my favorite season and I love fall colors. You chose the perfect plaids for your new stitches. Love your pretty Fall entryway and the pillow is perfect next to the Gus pillow. I'm glad you were not hit with the hurricane. Stay safe! Mary

  5. I enjoyed reading the story about you getting together with your husband. Sending you continued happiness and a belated anniversary greeting. I am glad you didn't have much damage from Gordon.

I really like the plaid fabric you used for your Autumn pillow. Your foyer looks good.

  6. One of the siblings is coming from Key West and it has been slow going for her! Glad you have had no damage so far! Loved your love story! I think being friends is a good basis for marriage! All the stitching looks great! I think I will finish up Live within your harvest! Then I have to try my hand at drum making! Prayers appreciated for our sibling reunion! I just want everything to go well!

  8. I've been thinking about you, Sandy, and wondering how the high winds and rains were affecting your part of Florida. Glad to read you are safe. Last September is when my in-laws house was flooded by the hurricane--they are not going back south until November this year and are praying no hurricanes visit the Naples area this fall!

I think you're right--you were just meant to be with your husband. Sometimes you just know these things :) I enjoyed your story!

Love your stitching and I totally understand how disappointing it is when the colors show up nothing like they do on the cover. That happens so very often and it really upsets me--after all, you buy a chart because you like the look of the photo on the cover, right?

Happy Autumn, Sandy--even though it is still 90 up here and probably even hotter than that where you are...

    1. I am definitely decorating a bit early this year although at the rate I am moving and my schedule this month it will take me two weeks:) I never decorate early, but for some reason it just hit me I was ready. If I wait for cooler temps, I might never put a pumpkin anywhere.
I was very disappointed with the colors of the moon. The floss was called Harvest Moon too. I don't hate it and think I can make it work, but I purchased it based on the photo. I am going to start googling it to find people who have done the stitch.
Grateful to just have rain this morning. I just have pine straw everywhere, but that is it. The water didn't even come over the sea wall so I am ecstatic.

  9. Sandy, Happy Anniversary! What a sweet story. I too am tempted to decorate for autumn. I have a few things put out but the bulk remains. Perhaps this week! I am so glad you didn't have too much damage from the storm.

Love your cross stitch. I tried to teach a session on cross stitch when working but OH MY..you talk about not having enough patience..my students COULD NOT understand the concept of "counting"!!!!!

    1. Imagine not being able to count. My mother and I despair all the time over young people counting change since she especially like to use "real money."

  11. Oh, poor begonia. We had our first rain of the season yesterday, nowhere near as dramatic, but very welcome. Happy Anniversary, dear Sandy!
